We just shared our first year of results at the Jeju RISE Results Sharing Conference on February 26, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come.

What RovoRoad Is

RovoRoad is a project I lead as Principal Investigator through the Jeju RISE Program, a 3-year funded initiative focused on intelligent road infrastructure damage monitoring and automated repair. The core idea is straightforward: detect road damage early using AI, then deploy robots to fix it. We’re building the full pipeline from detection to repair.

A True Cross-University Collaboration

This is joint research across three universities. I’m working with Professor Jinwoo Lee at KAIST and Professor Kyugeun Yoon at Seoul National University, each bringing deep expertise in robotics and materials science. The conference brought together Jeju’s entire RISE research community — it was a good reminder of how much is happening here.

Year 1 Results

In Year 1, we hit every milestone we set:

  • 1 patent filed
  • 2 KCI journal papers published
  • 1st-generation road repair material prototype developed
  • 1st-generation automated repair robot prototype completed
  • Jeju branch office established — a permanent operational base for field testing and deployment on the island

This was accomplished in just six months of active execution. The 1st-gen robot was on display at the conference, and seeing it draw real attention from attendees and the Jeju RISE community made the work feel tangible.

What’s Next

The next big milestone is April, when we unveil our 2nd-generation robot. This version will be a significant step up in both autonomy and repair capability. We’re moving from proof-of-concept to something that can actually work on real Jeju roads.

Why This Matters

What excites me most about this project is the practical impact. Jeju’s roads take a beating from weather and tourism traffic. If we can automate the detection-to-repair cycle, it changes the economics of road maintenance entirely.

None of this would have been possible without the vision and trust of CEO Namho Kim. His leadership and commitment to this technology from the very beginning have been the foundation everything else is built on.
